Band History
The Early
Years
The band struck their first notes way back
in 1837. Originally a Fife and Drum band the band changed
to its current Brass Band format in 1880.
From old photographs it appears that in 1880 the band had
13 members - 10 of whom had uniforms, heavily braided
tunics and hats with large plumes! The conductor in these
early years was Mr Henry Pierpoint (senior) who also acted
as band secretary. The band rehersed at the then newly built

In the 1920's interest in brass
bands grew and local players became keen on joining Rode
Hall Sivler Band. At this time there were also two bands
in Kidsgrove, two in Biddulph and one at Mow Cop.
Frequent brass quartet contests were held locally and
Rode Hall formed their own ensemble consisting of Mr H
Pierpoint (senior) - Solo Cornet : Mr F Pierpoint
(senior) - Second Cornet : Mr Albert Pierpoint - Tenor
Horn and Mr Jim Pierpoint - Euphonium. Quite a
family affair! The band remained at The Travellers Rest
until 1926 when they moved to Hall Green schoolroom. A
new uniform was finally purchased in 1914 which was
styled similar to the one worn today. After the second
world war the band was reformed. A meeting held at the
Bleeding Wolf between Tim Williamson, Bill Roberts and
Albert Pierpoint in 1946 resulted in all pre wra players
being contacted and invited to meet in the British
Legion room where the band have been rehearsing ever
since!
